T&I: Blessed For Success

T&I: Blessed For Success

Not everyone we influence will think the same way we do. We have to help them not only to believe that they can succeed, but also we have to show them that we want them to succeed…. So, how….

Expect it: People can sense the underlying attitude no matter what we say or do. Let them know you are expecting them to succeed.

Verbalize it:
People need to hear it. Tell them to that you believe in them and want them to succeed. Become a positive prophet of their success.

Reinforce it: People need encouragement. Seeing that you care to know their progress will let them realize that is also important to you.

Pave the way: Give them opportunity to show their best. Give them challenge to harness their worth. Give the boost and helping hand.

Once people recognize and understand that you genuinely want them succeed and are committed to helping them, they will begin to believe that they can accomplish what you give to them.

Progress Report: 101 in 1001 days

Progress Report: 101 in 1001 days

It’s been a month and a-half since my last progress report re my 101 list, and I’m not sure how I fare this time after 40 days because of holiday rush and festivities. Anyway, I will now do my “inventory”….

Great! I have scratched 4 of my goals!
1. First, the homecoming of my brothers and their families are truly memorable although we wished we had spent it longer! Time flies when we are really enjoying!
2. Second, the festive Christmas raffle and bingo was a hit! I actually won the grand prize of TV (weee…I hardly won on anything!) but I have to give it away for re-raffle… Gladly!
3. Third, the Christmas Charity Toy/Gift-Giving (the “Project K for K”) was doubly-fun and twice as successful! Thanks to all donors and volunteers!
4. I bought 2 good mattresses for our bed upstairs. Now Jolo and Lean are sleeping there… I like the bed too that I sometimes sneak in beside them.

I made progress on my several goals,
5. I have added some entries on “Doing First-Time” and “Adventures with Kids”
6. Finally been able to fix lighting, install vinyl flooring & redo paints in the house!
7. I read number of books this month (despite of toxic schedule)
8. I have several photo galleries thru SmileBox and Movie Maker and have posted them in my blog and YouTube.
9. Because I’ve already emptied the “donation box” last month, I’m allotting boxes again.
10. The “Tap-on-the Back” Challenge “reaped” what it “sow” when I announced the recognition of 6 audit staff. in return, they commended also in email a number of people as their mentors and inspiration! This effort multiplies exponentially and have given a boost to number of people.
11. Although the holiday season put “chaos” on my financial planning, I was able to save a portion (without thinking) to the mutual fund and forget about it (until now!)
12. There are few glitches on some of my goals, that I don’t know if I can do anything more (It’s about increasing my sales by 50% and about coming up with new pillow designs to sell)… Well, I believe i still can turn it around! That’s the spirit.
13. Started the “Team 17″ aimed to boost more my staff’s spirit and team efforts.
14. My spirituality was pinched (or tapped) a little after few talks with a friend and my Kuya… and also after reading the books “The Shack” and “Angels and Demons” (this deserves a blog entry, but don’t know yet how to articulate it…)
15. Started planning for the 75th birthday of Mama Abe.
16. Inspired few people in earth (directly or indirectly) to do the 101 in 1001 days!

I am Only One

I am Only One

I am only one
But still I am one.
I cannot do everything
But still I can do something;
And because I cannot do everything
I will not refuse to do something I can do.

– Edward Everett Hale

This is just a manifestation how great we are (& great we can be)— in our own “little” ways.
Just don’t belittle yourself…
And do not look on the “empty” portion of a half-full glass…

T&I: See How Can It Be Different….

T&I: See How Can It Be Different….

.I have sent this article to my staff as our guide for our annual audit planning and goal-setting…. Thank you for the link provided by the “Your Successful 101″….

It’s that time of year again when our thoughts turn to making new GOALS. The enticing prospect of a blank year ahead invites us to think about what we would like to be different in our lives, how we want to improve ourselves and the work we do. And yet so often, the good intentions of GOAL-SETTING of early January have dwindled down to just IDEAS as we go along the way, sometimes not to be brought out again until next year. And we are left with the same feeling of frustration that another year has passed and nothing has changed.

What happens? One common reason is that we quickly go back to our ‘normal’ lives and the usual routines and along with our usual habits!

Sound familiar?

So how can it be different?

I hope the following TIPS will make it different for this year:

1. Be clear about what you want – BE specific about what you do want. For example, if you have written “lose weight”, write down how much you want to lose and by when
2. Write it Down – Writing down why you want something will give you a handy reminder to go back to when you’re feeling un motivated.
3. Be specific about what you will do – It’s very hard to be in action around a vague list of “will do more of…” and “will do less of…”. If you gave your list to someone else would they know exactly what you were doing when?
4. Know what stops you – There will be times when it feels hard to be in action. Being honest with yourself about what will stop you now will let you plan for these situations rather than ending your resolutions.
5. Create support structures – Put support structures in place now that will keep you on track. Maximize team effort for team goals. Try buddy system, or use “tracker” or require team to do regular feedback.
6. Be in action – Sometimes the only thing that is required is to just do it! For no other reason that you said you would.
7. Embrace imperfection – Sometimes things will not go to plan. It happens. Don’t let it throw you off track completely. Make adjustments, come up with new ways of doing things, create a new plan for the imperfect world you live in. It’s perfect.
8. When failing isn’t failing – Feeling that you’ve failed at something can be a real kick in the teeth and the end to achieving goals. So think of failing differently. Failing means you are doing something different, possibly something new. Failing isn’t failing, it’s just not having done it yet. Fail Forward!
9. Reward yourself – Don’t hold out until the “big prize”. Create reward points along the way. Reward yourself for being in action. Be kind to yourself and use the carrot, or lots of carrots, and not the stick!
10. Enjoy! – Most importantly, your new year’s resolution (goals) are about being happier, more fulfilled, enjoying your life and work. If it is a punishment list put it in the bin right now!

Goal #5: Lesson Plan for Kids

Goal #5: Lesson Plan for Kids

My goal is to have conscious effort to teach kids about life’s lessons. Teaching them, among others, Religion, Generosity, Finance, History, Art, Right Manners and Having Dreams….. I really made it sure to have moments with my two boys talking and making stories. Time is short and I believe that most of the lessons we’ve learned were gained while we were still kids….
For this goal, I will consider this complete if I have taught them (or at least, talked to them about) 101 things related to above areas in life and many more. So here is the partial list:

1. Recite “Ama Namin” (“Our Father” in Tagalog) – (Lean already knew the English version since he was 3)
2. Story of the Fisherman’s Wife who was never satisfied, a lesson about greed (Lean)
3. Playing fair and square (while we were playing chess) (Lean)
4. About winning/losing without cheating (while playing Snakes and Ladder) (Lean)
5. Reading aloud a book about “Beliefs” (Lean was having fun counting the word “beliefs” I mentioned)
6. About habit formation at around adolescent years (Jolo)
7. Taught Jolo to save money for something he really wants to buy.
8. About being generous (Lean brought a spare Lego for his friend Aaron)
9. Talking about the course they want to take in college (it doesn’t matter even if they change mind every now and then)
10. Doing the best he can in every project he handles (Jolo)
11. About working hard, and about sowing and reaping (as Lean play the “Farmer” online game)
12. Rewards and consequences in attaining goals
13. Helps Jolo form his habit to clean his face every night, among others.
14. Helps Lean form his “4-things to do” habits every night. (Toothbrush, take a pee, clean his feet, pray)
15. Washing dishes every weekend (Jolo)
(see as the list grow at “Lesson Plan for Kids” at “My Life’s List” widget)

For our future curriculum, we will include:
a. Jolo’s lessons in Civics and history (2 facts everyday)
b. Art attack with Lean
c. Generosity-in-Action, when they accompany me in distributing toys for less-fortunate kids this Xmas
d. More practice on Po and Opo
e. Read World History to Lean (his favorite)
f. loving siblings
g. open bank account in their name
h. about being a friend
i. buying and using money (Lean)

Tips & Insights: Live Life to the Fullest

Tips & Insights: Live Life to the Fullest

raining
1. Throw out nonessential numbers. This includes age, weight and height. Let the doctors worry about them. That is why you pay ‘them’
I am a good example of this… I am not very quick in answering my age, it’s not that I am ashamed of it, it’s just that it doesn’t really matter… same with my weight… (but that one I have to work on a bit, for the sake of health)

2. Keep only cheerful friends. The grouches pull you down..
I’m glad that I have bunchful of funny and witty friends around who are great to laugh with.

3. Keep learning. Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening, whatever. Never let the brain idle. ‘An idle mind is the devil’s workshop.’ And the devil’s name is Alzheimer’s.
Yep, right… that’s why I’m always looking for new things to learn… it still amazes me to know some things, even how petty or irrelevant they are (example: EENT doctors are called othorhinolaringology… hehehe)

4. Enjoy the simple things.
Of course! If simple things will not amaze us, then we don’t deserve the big things! Me? I still enjoy pandesal on sardines, picking ears and reading good old Reader’s Digest..

5. Laugh often, long and loud. Laugh until you gasp for breath.
Moments of these are so few, and yet it’s satisfying… I have to remind myself to laugh often… Chico and Del (93.1FM, 6AM to 10PM) are always ON AIR every morning, right?… well, that’s a very good source of hearty laughs…

6. The tears happen. Endure, grieve, and move on. The only person, who is with us our entire life, is ourselves. Be ALIVE while you are alive.
Right! grieve sometime… but life must go on… fail, but fail forward… then stand tall… Choose to be Alive! (for myself and for others!)… As the quote in the image above (in case you can’t see it…) it says, “Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass, it’s about learning to dance in the rain!”

7. Surround yourself with what you love , whether it’s family, keepsakes, music, plants, hobbies, whatever. Your home is your refuge.
No matter how hard and heavy was my day, I always long for the refuge of home. Where love is there, where nothing is much expected from me, but be myself, but be at peace…. ohhhhhh….

8. Cherish your health: If it is good, preserve it.. If it is unstable, improve it. If it is beyond what you can improve, get help.
That’s right, I should not take my health for granted. It’s not really “beyond our control,” I believe. At least, I can prolong it if I’ll really just try.

9. Don’t take guilt trips. Take a trip to the mall, even to the next county; to a foreign country but NOT to where the guilt is.
Why should I? When guilt happens, I just let it pass (or make amends)… Next time around, I should know better!

10. Tell the people you love that you love them, at every opportunity.
Ommmh, something I am not very good at… But I am working on it….I know it will really make a difference for the one we give love to (and me also) …. Ya, I will have to make efforts….

AND ALWAYS REMEMBER :
Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.

We all need to live life to its fullest each day!!

Tips and Insights: Be Insanely Awesome

Tips and Insights: Be Insanely Awesome

monica-stewart-unity
Be twice as good at half the price!
In other words: be insanely awesome… go the extra mile!
It’s a powerful principle that we can apply in whatever we do.
For business, or in employment (and in life for that matter), we must constantly ask this question: “How can we give twice the value for half the price?”
As Bo Sanchez put it in business concept, he gave two big reasons why we need to do this:
First: you simplify the sales process! You don’t have to beg them to buy from you. People will be begging you to sell to them.
Second: You make your customer retention easier: Even if they scout around for other suppliers, they’ll discover that they can”t get the same value they get from you… and so will keep coming back to you.”
Same holds true to our life and our dealings with people and challenges. We must be insanely awesome in everything we do so we can leave a mark and make our worth more “worthy” to our “customers” (be it family, colleague, company, team, community… or God).
Go the extra mile, do more as expected.
Anybody can be “extraordinary” by giving a little “extra” on the ordinary!

“Everything I Need Comes To Me…”

Raindrops202A powerful phrase that attracts everything positive.
If one believes on it with conviction, then something wonderful as expected will happen.
This “abundance mentality” proves to be just as powerful if one will become open to all possibilities of growth and learning.
Just as useful if one will act to take a chance and act on opportunities at hand.
If nature provides us everything we need, then we should do all in our power to make use of it and create something good out of it.

Tips & Insights: It’s Not About Position… But Credibility…

Tips & Insights: It’s Not About Position… But Credibility…

Mario Ceroli - Pinocchio
Tips and Insights:

Our influence has less to do with our position or title than it does with the life we live. It’s not about POSITION, but production. It is not the education we get but the empowerment we give, that makes a DIFFERENCE to OTHERS.

The key word is CREDIBILITY. We gain credibility when our life matches our talk and when both add value to others.

How are you doing when it comes to credibility? To find out, answer the following vital questions….

Consistency: Are you the same person no matter who is with you?
Choices: Do you make decisions based on how they benefit you or others?
Credit: Are you quick to recognize others for their efforts when YOU succeed?
Character: Do you work harder at your image or your integrity?
Credibility: Have you recognized that credibility is a victory, not a gift?

Tips & Insights: Good Ideas

Tips & Insights: Good Ideas

bulbI missed last week’s “tips and insights” for my staff, coz I’ve been carried away by the tragedy that struck not only Manila but also Indonesia and Somoa and the anticipation of another typhoon… (haaaaY!)
Anyway, I have here some few insights for them….

Are Your Good Ideas Being Acted On….

There are many benefits to being the “In-charge” or the “boss,” but one of the major drawbacks is that your subordinates may not always in synch with you. In an effort to seem agreeable, they may say “yes” when they are thinking “no.” Or they may naively assume that since you are “smart” enough to be the “boss,” so your ideas are always going to be good ones, and they just let you be the one to think….
Sure, your ideas were important in starting your project. But it was your tenacity that made it happen. Trust your experience, but acknowledge that some of the ideas you get now may need a little fine-tuning, and inputs and challenge from your team members.
Don’t let anyone tell you how “smart” you are and let you do the “job” all by yourself. Surround yourself with the best people and ENCOURAGE them to treat your ideas as you treat theirs — with enough respect to CHALLENGE them.
If your key people are not regularly challenging your ideas — if they tend to defer to you — take responsibility for having turned them into cheerleaders. Sit them down. Ask for their support in the future. Then discuss how the group could best evaluate new ideas.
…. Better yet, derive IDEAS from them and DO the fine-tuning together.

Tips & Insights : Say No to Status Quo

Tips & Insights : Say No to Status Quo

standoutStatus quo is Latin for “the mess we’re in.”

Leaders see what is, but they also have the vision for what could be.
They are never content with things as they are.
To be leading, by definition, is to be in front, breaking new grounds, conquering new worlds, moving away from status quo.

Dissatisfaction with the status quo does not mean having negative attitude or grumbling.
It has to do with a willingness to be different.. to take the risks.
A person who refuses to risk change fails to grow.

Raymond Smith of the Bell Atlantic Corp once remarked: “Taking the safe road, doing you job, and not making any waves may not get you fired (right away, at least), but it is sure won’t do much for your career or your company over a long haul. Management is not dumb. We know that administrators are easy to find and cheap to keep. Leaders — risk takers– are in short supply. And ones with vision is pure gold.”

Risks seems dangerous to many people because they are comfortable with the old problems versus what it takes to come up with new solutions.

The difference is attitude.

Tips & Insights: Lead… Make a Difference…

Tips & Insights: Lead… Make a Difference…

Colin Powell Leadership Insights:

leadership1. Promote Clash of Ideas
– Leaders has to give them the opportunity to speak their piece, without fear of retribution. “The day soldiers stop bringing you problems, is the day you stopped leading them.”
2. Don’t’ go looking for “NO” – you don’t know what you can get away with until you try. Don’t ask for permission, just do what needs to be done. Mediocre managers carried out orders and waited for a new one. While the best managers experimented with new techniques, tried out new things with their teams often without asking anyone’s permission, that is, without being irresponsible or insubordinate.
3. Challenge the Professionals – Keep looking below surface appearances. Don’t shrink from doing so just because you might not like what you find.
4. Don’t Forget the Execution – A plan is only as powerful as the zeal to execute. There is little essence in laying out a battle plan unless you are prepared to pursue it with complete commitment. Execution matters.
5. Pay Attention to Details – If you are going to achieve excellence in big things, you have to develop the habit in little matters. Excellence is not an exception, it is the prevailing attitude.
6. Let Situation Dictate Strategy – Have the precise understanding of the situation at hand. Methods require flexibility and imagination, and the willingness to embrace change.
7. Trust those in the Trenches- The people in the field is closest to the problem, closest to the situation. Therefore that is where the real wisdom is.
8. Be optimistic – don’t let adverse facts stand in a way of a good decision. Never step on enthusiasm. Great leaders inspire a sense of hope and confidence, even under the most trying circumstances, and that is why they are needed so badly.

Guys, we need you… Lead and make a difference….

T&I: Credenda Means to Believe

T&I: Credenda Means to Believe

starsFrom “The Gift of Acabar” by Og Mandino
A favorite of mine…

Turn away from the crowd and its fruitless pursuit of fame and gold. Never look back as you close your door to the sorry tumult of greed and ambition. Wipe away your tears of failure and misfortune. Lay aside your heavy load and rest until your heart is still. Be at peace. Already it is later than you think, for your earthly life, at best, is only the blink of an eye between two eternities.

Be unafraid. Nothing here can harm you except yourself. Do that which you dread and cherish those victories with pride. Concentrate your energy. To be everywhere is to be nowhere. Be jealous of your time, since it is your greatest treasure.

Reconsider your goals. Before you set your heart too much on anything, examine how happy they are who already possess what you desire. Love your family and count your blessings. Reflect on how eagerly they would be sought if you did not have them.

Put aside your impossible dreams and complete the task at hand no matter how distasteful. All great achievements come from working and waiting. Be patient. God’s delays are never God’s denials. Hold on. Hold fast. Know that your paymaster is always near. What you sow, good or evil that you will reap. What you are is through your choice alone. Learn to live with honest poverty, if you must, and turn to more important matters than transporting gold to your grave.

Never meet trouble halfway. Anxiety is the rust of life; when you add tomorrow’s burdens to today’s their weight becomes unbreakable. Avoid the mourner’s bench and give thanks, instead, for your defeats. You would not receive them if you did not need them. Always learn from others. He who teaches himself has a fool for a master. Be careful. Do not overload your conscience.

Conduct your life as if it were spent in an arena filled with tattlers. Avoid boasting. If you see anything in you that puffs you with pride, look close and you will find more than enough to make you humble.

Be wise. Realize that all men are not created equal, for there is no equality in nature, yet no man was ever born whose work was not born with him. Work every day as if it were your first, yet tenderly treat the lives you touch as if they will all end at midnight. Love everyone, even those who deny you, for hate is a luxury you cannot afford. Seek out those in need. Learn that he who delivers with one hand will always gather with two. Be of good cheer.

Above all, remember that very little is needed to make a happy life. Look up. Reach out. Cling simply to God and journey quietly on your pathway to forever with charity and a smile. When you depart, it will be said by all that your legacy was a better world than the one you found.

Almost China….

Almost China….

We almost made it to China!border
It’s just that…. we were denied entry at the Hong Kong-Shenzhen border! :)
We didn’t fret over it, we just laughed at the experience and still had a great time at Hong Kong! Regardless of the tiresome 7-hour travel: Macao to HK, HK to Shenzhen border, and back to HK, nothing and no one can just dampen our feelings because we were having fun! Spontaneity also adds to the excitement!
Here are some of the things learned in the process:
;) no one is allowed to take the Turbojet from Macao to Schenzhen without a Visa.
:( no visa processing on SUnday
:( no more visa being issued at the HK border (unlike before)
;) don’t have high hopes when it seemed the Chinese are very helpful in the process
:o travel light
:( don’t book on a hotel in a county you don’t have visa yet
:) we can rely on our staff to book us anytime, anywhere
:) HK’s train system is so efficient
;) there is no such thing as “gentleman” in HK train
:) we can still have fun no matter what the situation!

T&I: Boost Yourself

T&I: Boost Yourself

Tips for Feeling Better About Yourself

smileysWell it’s rare for a person who isn’t sometimes (or often) have moments of self-doubt. When you’re feeling lousy about yourself, what can you do to feel better?

Then do something worthy of your respect. To like yourself better…do something that makes you likable. It’s tempting to think that support and encouragement from other people will reassure you, but A) often that doesn’t work and B) often you can’t winkle other people into giving you a pep talk.

Try this:
1. Do a good deed. This is as selfish as it is selfless; you’ll benefit as much as the person you’re helping. Make small gestures of good citizenship. Offer directions to someone who looks lost. Sign up to be an organ donor.
2. Choose nice clothes to wear. Look your best even if you don’t feel like it. That will surely boost you.
3. Keep a resolution. You’ll get a boost from the mere fact that you made a commitment (even not as grand like doing 5-minute walk daily or cleaning) and stuck to it.
4. Become an expert. There’s great satisfaction in mastery. Pick a subject that honestly interests you, and dig in deep.
5. Challenge yourself physically and boost your energy. Some people feel great after roller-coaster-ride (like me). For less daring, a bike ride, or cleaning the car or pole dancing can do the trick.
6. Keep an eye for positive things and circumstances. Think of half-full glass.
7. Smile. Lighten up. The smile “back” is as rewarding and contagious.
8. Don’t fret. Don’t think much about “how to be happy” as this highlights why you are gloomy in the first place. Do something fun.
9. Get enough sleep.

Things I Learned Today!

Things I Learned Today!

:( Don’t rush to please others without thinking about its cost to another.
;) I should guard myself against people who can “use” me for their seemingly good intent (but it’s not)
:x I should not make it easy for my dementor to antagonize me. I can make them confused, annoyed, and affected, too, without losing”me” in the process.
;) Take the chance to know your applicants, they have feelings too, (and life-story!)
:) Having foresight and vision is a very useful attribute of a leader.
:) Procedures need not be changed (at all times) if there are just lapses here and there…. Address the lapses, rather than resolving it by changing the process.
:) i learned the word “otorhinolaryngology” (and i can now recite it properly!)

Don’t be a Know-it-all Jerk

Don’t be a Know-it-all Jerk

jerkAvoid Seeming Like an Arrogant, Know-it-all Jerk.

Humility is a great virtue that any other virtues are rooted on this. Humility is sometimes construed as weakness or lack of self-confidence. But actually, if one is sincere to be humble, then one has more strong sense of self and can take “pride” of oneself. Humility is having consideration for others, appreciation for their views, curiosity about their lives, openness to failure, respect to others and willingness to be interested and be amused:

Here are some tips for showing humility:

1. Offer meaningful compliments: “You have a good memory,” “You obviously know a lot about this subject.”
2. Give credit to others: “The team did all the work,” “Jose came up with this idea.” Being generous with giving credit does NOT minimize your own contribution.
3. Ask questions and allow others to supply information. I’ve even seen some good leaders ask questions to which they knew the answers, merely to allow others the chance to demonstrate what they know.
4. You don’t know all the answers! —- And if you think so, then you are just as ignorant….
5. Admit error! It’s SO HARD to say “You were right, I was wrong” or “This was my fault,” but so important. Also, it’s a key to leadership. If you take responsibility for failure, it’s most likely you’ll be given responsibility for decisions.
6. Remember other people’s names and the details of their lives. It’s quite gratifying and shows sincerity.
7. Remember your limits. You’re just one person. You’re not infallible. It actually IS possible that you’re wrong.
8. Laugh at yourself. Tease. Few things are as winning as people who are willing to poke fun at their own mishaps, and be jolly with others.
9. Refuse to take offense. It’s their problem not yours! “Pride” takes offense but “humility” shrugs it off.
10. Be courteous to others, no matter who they are.

“The final test of a gentleman is his respect for those who can be of no possible service to him.”

Goal to Give More

Goal to Give More

gift I came across these nice sites the “29-day Giving Challenge” and the “Global Giving Village” and I was amazed how many generous people out there that give their time, energy, love and little something for various causes.

I believe that the best gift is something we dont expect anything in return.

But, little it may be, once we give, we “get back” the feeling of JOY. Most of the times, the “payback” is greater than the things we gave away. Tangible or intangible. Sometimes, we receive them from the least expected or on the dire situation we need them. I believe in that law of universe, the law of abundance when we give, share more.

By the way, in most instances, TIME of oneself is the best thing to give to someone.

I am challenged by that 29-day thing, so, i will try… to give more…. and beyond 29-days….:)

My Goal: Laugh Some More!

My Goal: Laugh Some More!

Why should I take life seriously? Laughter is good for the heart! and for enriching my time with kids! My 7-year old delivered some jokes… it gave me good laughs! Samples:
1. Why couldn’t the sailors play cards? … Ans: Because the captain was standing on the deck…
