101 Minus: Mama Mia with Mama

Standard

No. 18 – Have a Solo Date with Mama
(Have to update my 1st 101 list 🙂 )
I got 2 tickets for the musical play Mamma Mia at the CCP last February… Its a pricey show and limited for few weeks only in the Phils. So its a date with my Mama! The musical featured Abba songs which are kind of oldies that’s my best companion that would appreciate it is my mom… The show was great, their voices are powerful. The music are nostalgic! We had a great time!

101 in 1001: Part 2

Standard

May 6, 2012 marked the last day of my first 101 in 1001 days… the 1001st day since I made that list… Soon I will recap the final accomplishments, unfortunately I haven’t done a few things or updated some, I maybe have done only about 83% in my list, but I think that’s pretty good enough and I will not be “hard” on myself. That’s 84 out of 101. Others who have done this list way back 2009 (I think that’s the birthyear the Day Zero Project), have either lose heart and fell out of radar, and those who keeps on it until the 1001st day accomplished only an average of 70% (and they feel great too!).

I feel awesome looking at my 101 in 1001 goals. I wouldn’t have thought doing most of those silly, adventurous, fulfilling things without having a list to remind me what are the most important things in life. IMPORTANT things are often set aside (thinking there will always be time in the future to do that), and we busy ourselves on menial, urgent, superficial (unrewarding) stuff. I realized that we have to be deliberate on our choice on what we do in our time…. our life.

Life is great! Life is deliberate! Life is fun! Happiness is a choice!

Even before May 6th, I have already came up with my shortlist of the my 2nd 101 things to do. June 9, 2015 will be my next 1001st day! (See also the new website where one can keep track of their 101 and get inspiration too.)

My 101 Minus Update… just 60 days left…

Standard

See also page here
I think almost the rest of the remaining tasks are quite long to do to be considered accomplished… But having only about 60 days more, I am reviewing them right now and I think i can commit to slash-off all of these goals, I must admit i have to do some modification (example boat ride along Pasig River is now impossible, since the river is under rehabilitation)…. for now, here are some I can say “DONE”:
51. #22 Vacation every year (Boracay ’09; Macau ’09; Singapore ’10, Sagada ’11; Puerto Princesa ’11, Coron ’11, Ilocos ’11, Bicol ’12) – not bad…
52. #19 Take Dad to Bicol (see blog) – Jan 2012
53. #28 Adventures with kids (every month)
54. #64 Visit home for the aged (Dec 2011)
55. #86 Meralco shares, keep for long-term
56. #6 Bonding with Papi

Hmmmp… Not quite… but I am not losing heart… there are tasks that just needs “proof” like compilation (101 Travelling Feet, digital scrapbook and music video) to be considered done. But what is more difficult are some of the habit forming tasks…. but will keep at it… i just have to remind myself 🙂

My #19th of my 101: Take Daddy to Bicol

Standard

This is among the first few goals I wanted to do when I listed my 101 in 1001! It is my most ardent want to have a trip with Daddy back to his beloved hometown, Bicol…  I have been contemplating this trip since year 1 of my 101 project. The original plan was to have a long-drive going there, but then came the announcement of newly-renovated-re-operated train to Bicol last July that I announced to Daddy that we will take that. For some reason, the excitement faded since there were news of unstable tracks… that’s why I decided for a plane booking.

Funny thing, when Cebu Pacific offered a promo trip lastAug 8, 2011 (heroes day?), for P8 fare, I grabbed first 3 plane tickets for Daddy, Mama and Lean (one-ride P8, going back at reg fare) but when I tried another booking few minutes later for me and Aliya, there’s no available seats in promo… that’s why I have to book in reg. fare. (Ninang and Nunu’s tickets were bought in later date at much higher cost).

(my 82-year-old groovy dad, at Cagsawa Ruin, Mayon Volacano, Leagspi)

(the gang, at Daraga Church, Legaspi)

Anyways, i will save the rest of the stories of adventures and misadventures later (blog), but for now I want to share that I have done it, and I’m happy that Dad’s happy! We have seen his brothers and sisters again (the last time he was there I think was 6 years ago, and he had just visited the place at least 7 times since my lifetime).  Btw, he’s now 82 yo. What’s fun about this trip is that it triggered Dad’s memory from his childhood, and he made kwento about it.  The story became vivid, now that we were in Bicol. Here’s the 15 things I knew more about Daddy (although some of it I heard before, but not as detailed):

  1. That he was a kutsero in his teens (driver of kalesa or horse-carriage)
  2. That his Papa owned a fleet of kalesa,
  3. That he hated to become kutsero in his lifetime,
  4. that’s why he escaped (naglayas) in a barge going to Manila
  5. That he was helped by an American who operated a barge transporting goods back and forth Manila and Bicol. He was a helper in a barge.
  6. That he was compelled to go back, otherwise, the family will not allow Manay Mimay (his sister) be married, unless he’s there.
  7. That a kin saw him in the fort of Pasacao accidentally and told him to go back home because of his sister’s predicament
  8. That his Mama (died in his early age) left them a large parcel of land, but his share was on the hillside.
  9. That he dreamed of building a dream rest house there (I remember his house layout on this when I was a kid and he even asked us to contribute an idea of the design), but allegedly the place was inhabited by “unwanted” people that he lost interest on it.
  10. That even he’s a Bicolano, he haven’t seen some parts of Legaspi, that’s why the Lignon Hill and Mayon Resthouse are new to him.
  11. That he frequented solera (?) a province-style night club, wherein girls will dance with boys for every ticket bought. (he bragged this story to our van driver).
  12. That almost all of the stretch of Pasacao Beach was used to be owned by his uncle. (Only a part now is left to his cousin).
  13. The reason why he hates suka (vinegar)… and most of his brothers and sisters hate it too… (his stepmom used to bathe them with it as cure to their flu)
  14. That he loves and misses “tinumtungan” dish (a coconut-based bamboo shoot dish).  He got his wish on our 2nd day lunch.
  15. That (I’m amazed) that he can still speak fluent Bicol language.

Well, I could have heard more of the stories if I paid more attention (they were speaking their language that I cannot fully understand). But anyway i still have time to find out more, i will just have to find time chatting with dad, even in our favorite chairs by the window (Bulacan). Have to visit them more….

more stories later….

101 Minus: Update… Almost half

Standard

ALMOST… almost halfway through… and I still have at least 200 days… not quite too much for another to finish 55 more tasks…anyway, I know half of it are continuing, progressing tasks, while others are “one-shot deal”…. but  I will get there…. I will (try to) finish them all (my 101 in 1001 days).

101 Minus: Adventure with Kids 2011

Standard

As part of my 101, I continue on having memorable fieldtrips and adventure with kids…
To recap the past get-away, here it is….

January – Lean’s fieldtrip in Subic’s Paradise Ranch and Ocean Adventure. We brought along our 2 1/2 Aliya…
February – Swimming at Villa Filomena… Just to “celebrate” Valentines
March – Swimming at Amana to celebrate Lean’s birthday
April – Sagada adventure with Jolo
May – PhiPhi Resort Bataan beach getaway with Lola Baby and Lolo Maurice
June – ALiya’s Bday at MOA, Father’s day treat at Shakey’s
July – Case Ibiza at Antipolo with Lean and Jolo and Mama and Daddy
August – Trinoma malling with Kids, Lunch at Tempura

These activities I have to deliberately plan, so it will happen. One regretful things to think is when one look back to years that passed, one cannot find something worthwhile and enjoyable memories worth bringing as “baon” esp when we get old…. These are the things i want to remember. It may be few (compared to the work-hours I spent with work), but these are the lasting ones….

This is considered done for the sake of my 101 list… but we will continue to plan and do stuff like these!

101 minus – #61 Gift of Blood

Standard

Have finally donated a portion of my blood last June 28 to Red Cross, organized by Puregold. I have asked a number of volunteers too from my Audit Dept. This task in my 101 has been “unscratched” for quite some time :< but know that I had made some efforts in between for a chance to give blood…

Gift of blood is one of "simple" but noble contributions one can make to society, there are lot who needed them, and our healthy body can produce as much, enough to give… So, maybe before ny 101 ends I will have my second dose…

Update on my 101 minus

Standard

Have been awhile since I visited my 101 lists and somewhat i realized that I’ve been unconsciously doing the things I put there (I mean, even without conferring to the list every now and then)… however, when I took “inventory” I am just in my 33rd! to think I only have more or less 400 days! panic, panic… need to do the 67 things more…

anyway, i see that the 6 tasks i’ve done since July are quite substantial…

28. #20 – My first compilation of my “first-time” list
29. #77 – New business venture – pillows (Sept 2010) and our 1st bazaar experience
30. #68 – My birthday-charity marathon (4 charity works before my 40th birthday!)
31. #89 – My new bathroom! finally! (Jan 2011)
32. #32 – Bonding with Papi at Puerto Princesa (Feb 2-6)
33. #76 – New room for auditors! (March 4, 2011)

Anyway, still need to catch up!

My New Camera!

Standard

I’ve been wanting to have a professional camera (and be serious in photography), it’s in my 101 list! But I know its too pricey… and there lot of “priorities” in my list before that, i know. And we already have 2 digital cameras … But I saw this sleek semi-professional camera Canon G11, and with a nice price (compared to really pricey one for prof camera). It’s been offered to me since March by my friends-pare in the office, together with an LCD TV. I bought the LCD TV (because it’s for everyone’s delight), and I thought a new ref will do fine with the money I have – equivalent to the price of that camera. Practical mom, di ba! So, I said NO to the camera! (I should not indulge myself for my only sole delight! no-no-no!)

However, my friends, as if tempting me, are allowing me to use it since March. It’s been in-and-out of my “possession.” I really keeps on giving it back to them shunning the temptation. But they keep on bringing it up to me because they know of my indecision to buy it (and my yearning, my “deepest desire”!)… Then the offer went good and I run out of alibi not to buy it. Tapos na daw ang enrollment! After so much thought and computation, I finally succumbed to my guilt-full “craving” to buy this sleek Canon G11! Haaay! Am I happy? Yes!… I just really need to justify this “selfish” decision of mine… haay…. (anyway, its in my 101 and I can slash it now my #46th! and for one thing, Jolo likes it!)

101 Minus: Wall Climbing & Pole Jumping

Standard

It was a great day when we did lots of physical stuff during our annual conference and team building. I was so excited in our wall climbing and pole jumping games… although half of me doubted if I can still do it! or can I still be awed by it! Of course I did it! These are some of the pictures back then at Meralco Leadership and Development Center at Antipolo.

101 Minus 15th – Bonding Moments with Ma & Dad

Standard

#23 of my 101 – Relaxed Moments and Adventures with Parents (Abroad or Province) – This time it’s Subic!

I have planned for this trip for multiple purposes. It was originally because the announced store opening of Puregold Duty Free Subic was March 15. I booked right away for the house of my dear former Boss Manny from SGV as early as February and I happened to secure the place. Great! It is also the birthday getaway of Jolo and Lean. And I really have to squeeze this gimick in my tight schedule because of my commitment (to myself) of at least 2 adventures every month. Plus, it can also be a treat to Mama and Dad! So, off we go!

I invited my parents to come with us for some meaningful bonding moments. With only us in the big house (of 4 bedrooms, 5 baths and one big play room), we watched there the Pacman boxing with Clottey and just relaxed! Or so I thought, because relaxing is not suitable if you have 3 kids in tow. So we went for a great fun at Tree Top Adventure! I think this is a must in Subic! So, we tried the “rides” if that’s what is called of tossing us between trees, sideways and upwards! Jolo and Papi did the “Interactive Tree Fall” and “Surfing” while Jolo and I did the “Superman” (read more here as this is also an accomplishment of one of my 101), later on Lean and I rode the Canopy Ride for 40-minutes cable ride (chair) atop the trees up to 150 feet. See for yourself, see this site. The following day, we went on beach swimming at All Hands Beach (which Aliya enjoyed so much) and sunset watching.

But the highlight of our escapades (at least for me) is our daily breakfast at the garden… Just the family and Mama and Daddy! relaxed talks and lots of laughters! Great, great weekend!

Did I mentioned that the store did not open on that weekend? so I just drop-by to see the set-up (while they watch the sunset….)

Progress Report: 101 in 1001 days

Standard

It’s been a month and a-half since my last progress report re my 101 list, and I’m not sure how I fare this time after 40 days because of holiday rush and festivities. Anyway, I will now do my “inventory”….

Great! I have scratched 4 of my goals!
1. First, the homecoming of my brothers and their families are truly memorable although we wished we had spent it longer! Time flies when we are really enjoying!
2. Second, the festive Christmas raffle and bingo was a hit! I actually won the grand prize of TV (weee…I hardly won on anything!) but I have to give it away for re-raffle… Gladly!
3. Third, the Christmas Charity Toy/Gift-Giving (the “Project K for K”) was doubly-fun and twice as successful! Thanks to all donors and volunteers!
4. I bought 2 good mattresses for our bed upstairs. Now Jolo and Lean are sleeping there… I like the bed too that I sometimes sneak in beside them.

I made progress on my several goals,
5. I have added some entries on “Doing First-Time” and “Adventures with Kids”
6. Finally been able to fix lighting, install vinyl flooring & redo paints in the house!
7. I read number of books this month (despite of toxic schedule)
8. I have several photo galleries thru SmileBox and Movie Maker and have posted them in my blog and YouTube.
9. Because I’ve already emptied the “donation box” last month, I’m allotting boxes again.
10. The “Tap-on-the Back” Challenge “reaped” what it “sow” when I announced the recognition of 6 audit staff. in return, they commended also in email a number of people as their mentors and inspiration! This effort multiplies exponentially and have given a boost to number of people.
11. Although the holiday season put “chaos” on my financial planning, I was able to save a portion (without thinking) to the mutual fund and forget about it (until now!)
12. There are few glitches on some of my goals, that I don’t know if I can do anything more (It’s about increasing my sales by 50% and about coming up with new pillow designs to sell)… Well, I believe i still can turn it around! That’s the spirit.
13. Started the “Team 17” aimed to boost more my staff’s spirit and team efforts.
14. My spirituality was pinched (or tapped) a little after few talks with a friend and my Kuya… and also after reading the books “The Shack” and “Angels and Demons” (this deserves a blog entry, but don’t know yet how to articulate it…)
15. Started planning for the 75th birthday of Mama Abe.
16. Inspired few people in earth (directly or indirectly) to do the 101 in 1001 days!

Project K for K! Another Hit! (Episode 2)

Standard

Event: Project Kindness for Kids (Share-a-toy!)
Place: The Garage, Matungao Bulacan
Date: December 24, 2009
With : Family

Yes, another episode of Project K for K was held at Matungao Bulacan, Bulacan (our hometown). We have prepared toys for about 150 kids within the vicinity and we gave it away on the 24th. It’s been fun, warming experience having brought smile to kids. Plus, the “cousinhood” was having a really great time volunteering during the distribution…. Some of our nephews and nieces even waited on the line to receive their share of toys as well, then they distributed candies. It was also a plus-experience for Chuko and Deanne as, aside from having fun too, Chuko also need “community service credits” even on vacation as required by their school back in US.
Christmas is really for fun, fun, fun and giving, giving, giving! What a wonderful blessing being a part of a blessing to others (even in simple ways…). What a wonderful feeling! Life is really meant for these moments!

Project K for K: A Success! (Episode 1)

Standard

Event: Project Kindness for Kids (Share-a-toy!)
Place: Letre, Dagat-dagatan, Caloocan
Date: December 19, 2009
With : SAMAKA group, EVC and SGV Staff, Ex-SGVeans, Puregold Auditors, SVS Staff, Papi, Jolo and Lean

It was a success! We have brought smiles and joy to almost 700 kids with our humble gift of toys and food packs! The supports from different groups within my sphere were overwhelming! The SGV Staff and Ex-SGVeans were there with our dashing Boss Manny Clarino! My PG auditors were there to help me before and during the event (buying grocery raffle items and soliciting more donations)! Friends like Bel Fernando and Mary Sumera Demetillo also joyfully volunteered. Our SVS Staff, led by my dear friend Flor, also took efforts overnight packing gifts and stuff! Also, the SAMAKA group who organized the kids on location! Thanks to all of you! Of course, a lot of appreciation as well to all who have sent their pledges, donations in kind, and lots of cheers and encouragement! Salamat! It was a success!

What a wonderful day to start celebrating my birthday! (This is just one of many ways!)

Part 2 of this happened at Matungao Bulacan… (my next blog…), and Part 3 will push-through this January…. (because of donations still pouring in!)

By the way, I can now slash one of my no. 58th on my 101 list re this, but definitely I will repeat it again in December 2010…

101 Minus 8th and 9th – About Finances

Standard

Goal No. 79: Invest more on Mutual Fund
Have been thinking about a lot of things and one of them is about savings for the future. I have learned a lot (or I mean I put it in my hard brain again what I knew all along) about finances and future. I resolved that I have to have a constant thoughts about saving rather than spending. If I don’t usually flinch in spending for something, I should adopt the same attitude about putting them in safe saving. “Safe’ means I should not be able to retrieve it easily and without undue and dire reason. So, I am into Mutual Fund thing. I made sure that every month or everytime there’s unexpected receipt (like Lola Baby’s gift to Aliya and insurance proceeds), I put it into Mutual Fund. I have now also developed the habit of looking at the value of my investment everyday. Well, glad to say, that it is truly growing. 🙂

(Hey, it is also in mutual fund where I put the committed $20 or P500 saving for every goal accomplished here in 101)

Goal No. 84: Decide on the Old Insurance Plan (to Keep or Withdraw)
I made costly mistake by not being so conscious about the investments I made in the past. And now I have to decide whether to straigthen this up and continue with the policy or to recoup what’s left and cut further losses. I made honest assessment about my future intentions and capability if I will choose to continue it, and I have to be realistic… this will again become my least priority. So, I decided to withdraw whatever cash surrender value left from it (after deducting the interest accrued from the unpaid premium). I just console myself that if I will further delay my decision, the cash value will further diminish. So, I pulled it out and will put it in Mutual Fund. 🙂 😦

Moving Forward on my 101….

Standard

walking in the rain#79: keeps on the habit of investing in mutual fund, (I have received 10k gift of Lola Baby to Aliya and it all goes to mutual fund, 5k goes to car registration)
#84: have finally decided to pull-out Jolo’s plan so not to diminish its value further (I will just put it in mutual fund)
#87: be more aware of financial matters: Meralco shares is going up (and now going low)… decide… decide… I have so&so shares at stake…
#94: Bought a microwave oven
#91: starting remodelling my purple room
#5: had a good “talk” with Jolo about attitude and habits. Also, bought the Jabbawokeez Mask for Jolo, Chess for Lean and new slippers for Aliya (been in my “to do” list for long), have to spend more time “dancing” with Jolo and playing with Lean and ALiya…
#17: Seen 2 groups of friends (SVS and SJS) and had fun
#30: went out our street to see the fireworks coming from SM, even I was the only one there gasping and amazing!
#34: adding more on my ‘travelling feet’ collection
#48: been conscious about learning new things and keeping tabs on them… (i’m currently reading about physics and religion)
#49: slowly creating habit for my health (ex. drinking 2 glasses of warm water every morning, less rice, take the opportunity to walk)
#58: finally launched by “pledge-gathering” for my Christmas Toy Gift-Giving… (I set-up a ChipIn (see my account how you can make contributions) and formally announced to network friends that I am “desperately” need of pledges)
#67: did “Pay-it-Forward” deed, I bought two tickets for “Truly Rich Seminar” of Bo Sanchez and gave it to two of my favorite cousins! (hey don’t forget me when you get rich!)

#70: released 1 major policy for implementation and 2 new policies for review

101 Minus 7th – One Great Spontaneous Adventure (UAAP Basketball Finals) #33

Standard

October 8, 2009
warrior
We got spontaneous tickets to watch the UAAP Basketball Finals Season 72, University of the East vs. Ateneo…. And we had one great and spontaneous fun and excitement!

It was so great that despite clamor for tickets for this finals, my friend was able to get tickets within 2 days before the game. It was so amazing (as it was quite impossible to get tickets on short-notice). But through the “power” of our ever-enthusiastic, and ever-resourceful friend Flor, we got 22 tickets! So, SVS staff also came! (the Partners and the staff are almost all UE alumni!)

It would have been Super Great if UE won the title (after almost 10 years?)… but unfortunately Ateneo won. (see the score board below)

But regardless, we really had fun and the verge of adrenalin! Even for the not-so-basketball-fans (like me), the game will make you jump and shout and be carried away. The event was really memorable (especially when they sung the UE theme – which amazingly we can still sing)

Great! Great! Hope next year we’ll be able to repeat this! Go UE Warriors Go!

101 Minus 6th – The 29-day Giving Challenge (#60)

Standard

gift
I came across a site: 29-day Giving Challenge: Changing Life One Gift at a Time!. It promotes simple acts of altruism and generosity believing that one simple deed can make an impact to anyone. Thus, I challenged myself to do conscious “effortful” act of giving. (But I have a confession to make, I officially did the 29-gift-giving in 59 days, but there are menial gifts in between).

True to my theme “butterfly effect,” I believe that this will change somehow the series of event in the lives of those people I “touched”… I just hope and pray that only good things will it bring….

by the way, i will not stop on the 29th gift…. 🙂

101 Minus 5th – Volunteer @ Tumana (#59)

Standard

feet on mud
There are lots of opportunities to volunteer now…. The tragedy and calamity brought about by super typhoons “Ondoy” and “Pepeng” brought sorrows, grief and devastation to most of us, but amidst of it all, it also brings out the kindness in us and good spirit….

Last week, we have done relief-giving to those hit by flood… I just happened to know that a colleague (a victim one herself) was asking for volunteers to distribute the goods in Tumana, Marikina (the most badly-hit). And it so happened that our department have collected too many stuff, that, after we have personally distributed most of them to affected members of our department, there were still lot more. So I offered them to this group. I packed them in my car trunk, and I volunteered myself and my car to go wherever it is…

The experience was very tiring and perspiring as we have to take down the packed goods from 4th floor (we are not complaining, mind you). Then we took them in the site.

What we saw of the aftermath of the devastation will be forever imprinted in my memories. It was MORE than the mud, the wasted stuff, the smell, the news-worthy river, the debris and the damaged houses…. BUT there was air of despair, expectation, anticipation and frustration. I believe that these people are not used to beg or ask for “alms” or relief… but putting aside their pride, they have to take the long line and endure waiting (and even run after our truck of good) just to get little pack of basic sustenance. Because they need them… badly!

line relief

The experience was moving, eye-opening and heart-breaking!

I wish we could do more….

(While we have not yet recovered from the calamity of typhoon Ondoy in Manila, just merely after a week, the Northern Luzon was also hit by typhoon Pepeng and have also experience wrecking flood. And now, we are bracing for the coming of another super typhoon Ramil)
